Milan Damjanovski

- North Macedonia -

Milan Damjanovski is born on 23 August, 1977 in Skopje. He works as an Assistant Professor of Literature at the Department of English Language and Literature at the Faculty of Philology “Blazhe Koneski, Ss. Cyril and Methodius University. He has a PhD. in English Literature on the subject of “Voice and Identity in the works of Robert Browning, Blazhe Koneski, James Joyce and Slavko Janevski”.

Furthermore, he also works as a free lance interpreter and literary translator. He has translated into English works form prominent contemporary Macedonian writers, such as Vladimir Martinovski, Blazhe Minevski and Svetlana Hristova Jocik. Furhermore, he has translated for renowned literary organizations, such as the Struga Poetry Evenings and the Macedonian P.E.N, Review. His translation of the novel “The Mark” by Blazhe Minevski was nominate for the prestigious Dublin Impac Award 2013.

Milan Damjanoski is editor of Blesok Prose. He has published a book of aphorisms Status of Our Times for Blesok Publishing.

My home
Are two faces
Seemingly sad
Staring motionlessly at each other
As if a chasm had opened between their eyes
As if they can peer
Deep into the heart of the other
Where the first raptures of love
Still quietly quiver

My home is also a little girl
That roams freely on the margins of the unknown
That would embrace the river and kiss the sun,
A dove’s thought fluttering in its palm
And wonders between the two faces
Like a sigh between two stones
Or a boat loaded with blue basil
Floating between two islands lost in the night

My home is a short corridor, too,
Where all the scents of the cosmos are adrift
Kral Majales, the King of May
Ginsberg just behind the wardrobe
A half-open window letting the night’s breath sneak inside
Temples of dust that hover above the crooked shelves
Where the draught worships its father
Thousand clothes buried in the corners of the eyes
Hands drawn under the carpet
Sweat oozing into the clay pot
And the plump wasp that each noon
waddles on the edges of the blue shades

My home are four toothbrushes in a plastic cup
And the spot of blood on one of them
And those few sighs before falling asleep

In the middle of my home
The four sides of the world flow in
And all the poverty of pointlessness with them
Yet, my home
Has always proven to be too small
For a life of one’s own.

Always black
On black

It unfolds
Like a tear in the dark

Secret Lives / Тајни животи

We shall be killed by our secret lives,
our voices left to linger in phone conversations
with people saved under fake names.
Our thoughts left suffocating in the unaired rooms
of our pride, sunk under thick layers of leaden guilt.
Our soul’s spirit evaporating into two bottles of expensive wine,
drunk in-between the fireworks for the bank holidays of solitude.
Our bodies inscribed on menus of fancy restaurants:
dry, purple red, fruity scent with traces of love…
My times dying out in millimeters of lousy passion.

what’s her name,

sugar and pride.
The second grain of time
falls around Tašmajdan
when a corrupt politician thinks of
new tricks to avoid prison,
then something tries hard to break into
the prison of the bulletproof car.
Noon, the arrows point at
bullets and freedom.
The third grain of time
drops in Aleppo,
where under a bomb-riddled sky,
an infant crawls between
its parents’ stiffened bodies
and reaches for the mother’s bosom.

milk and death.

кога со поглед те канев
на пат околу светот во сребрениот автомобил,

in the café in Capri
so i can be born again.
i am clay shaped by your grasp,
laughter singing from your throat,
a rose standing naked before you.
can i be anything more?

i die in every verse
that you breathe life into,
i sleep in this strange house
nameless like the southern wind,
a secret that you hide
from the welcoming streets.
i am the bead of sweat on your face
when you’re asked if you love another.
bitter esspresso on your sweet lying lips.
you wash me out when needed.
but what do i know of this world?

a neon light flashes
excitedly.
the room has no
kitchen
secrets
contraceptives.
two men on the third floor
turn up the TV volume.
the ivy silently crawls up the facade.
the gas station
spies the city.
daybreak.
the sheets are drawers
overflowing with the hangover
of the past two nights.
eyes are glued shut
alarms sing in unison with the muezzin.
lovers get to meet all over
again in the daylight,
acting as if they know what to do
grasping for their clothes and memories
scattered all over the floor.
